Each month, we set two daters up at a restaurant, give them free food and drinks, then wait for the magic to happen. This month’s Blind Date, we set Josie and Jonah up for a special night at Centro Mexican Kitchen in Boulder.

Celebrity crush: Christian Nodal and Scarlett Johansson.
Guilty pleasure: Binge watching shows and movies that I’ve already watched. My favorite is watching Harry Potter, over and over again.

ROUND 1

It’s a warm, sunny day on Pearl Street in Boulder. Our daters arrive, and embrace—first introductions are a success. The Centro patio is warm and inviting. The margaritas are cold and comforting—tequila always helps! After the first sips of cocktails and exchange of pleasantries, we pull Josie and Jonah aside to test the spice level.

How’s it going so far?
Jonah: It’s going well. She’s sweet, easy to chat with, and fun to be around.
Josie: It’s going pretty good. He’s very good at conversing with me. Pretty chill vibes from what I’m picking up. Nothing too crazy. He seems like a ‘city boy’ and I am not a ‘city girl.’

What were your first impressions of your date?
Jonah: She didn’t shy away from eye contact and I appreciate that. She seems in touch.
Josie: Very gentleman-like. He always wants me to try things first. Try my stuff first, try his drink first, try his food first. Very gentleman-like.

Is this the type of person you’d normally date?
Jonah: No. She has a kid. I normally wouldn’t go on a first date with someone with a child – not that that’s a red flag completely—but I wouldn’t go on a first date. I haven’t dated many native Spanish speakers. Everything she says I’ve asked her to say again because I love the way she says it. Her accent – I can’t handle it! Like say enchiladas slowly in my ear please and thanks. I’m weak!
Josie: No. He’s not the type I would normally date, but again, this is about stepping out of my comfort zone and I’m opening my mind and going with it, ya know?

Where do you normally meet potential partners?
Jonah: I’m on dating apps. I meet half on dating apps and the other half through me playing live shows, meeting friends of friends, or going to a party. I enjoy meeting people out and about.
Josie: I try to meet anyone anywhere really. If it happens, it happens. But anytime that I’m out and trying to mack on any guys, it’s a concert or bar vibes. I haven’t really dated much.

What’s the strangest dating story you have?
Jonah: The first date was me subbing on her kickball team. We lost, but I made a really nice play that everyone loved and I made some friends on the team. But I did not join the team. It was a fun time.
Josie: One time we went to a party out in Kirby, Colo. and it was so fun, but then it turned very quickly. The cops showed up and everyone freaked out. I hid in a trunk that night thinking that was the best solution. It was not! But I didn’t get in trouble and everything turned out fine. We got out of the trunk! I thought it was the best hiding place because I was underage. My homies pulled up and picked us up.

What are you most nervous about for tonight?
Jonah: The worry of what if we don’t hit it off or if it’s a tough date. Being photographed and interviewed after a tough date. That’s about it.
Josie: I was most nervous for the experience, in general. I get really nervous before anything but with this you don’t know what’s coming. But it’s actually really cool and it’s not so nerve-wracking.

Did you get any advice for this date?
Jonah: No. Nothing.
Josie: I did. I got advice to have fun, put on a good show and enjoy myself.

How did you prepare for the date?
Jonah: I went to the Apple store and browsed. I didn’t really prepare at all. I’m fully myself and I don’t need to center myself before a date.
Josie: I waxed my armpits and put some good lotion on to smell good.

How did your date dress tonight?
Jonah: She looks great. She looks personable and warm.
Josie: My date dressed casual with a cap. I like casual so I like that.

ROUND 2

The night seems to be a spiritual journey of unknowns and tasty margaritas As we prepare for the second round of questions, we struggle to pull Jonah away from the date as the conversation is strong. Let’s see what they say.

How’s it going
Jonah: It’s good. Conversation is flowing, it’s easy to jump from topic to topic.
Josie: It’s going pretty good. I feel like we hold a good conversation between the two of us. We can talk about anything.

What have you been talking about?
Jonah: We’re talking about how the future doesn’t involve the past. We’re getting into it. Every day is a beautiful opportunity to be yourself.
Josie: We’ve been talking about life in general, and how the way we are is because of our parents. I like being able to talk about my daughter and not feel like I’m being judged.

Do you two have anything in common?
Jonah: We both have a lust for life, but we don’t have anything in common in terms of upbringing and history, which I like. But we have things in common in regards to disposition and how we perceive a moment and how we both want to grow and improve.
Josie: We both like to have fun and go with the flow. He plays guitar and I like to make music so we’re definitely vibing on the music for sure.

What do you like about your date?
Jonah: I like that we’re talking about not where we come from as much as where we are going. I don’t like dates that revolve around “Where’d you go to school, what do you do, what was your last relationship like?”
Josie: I like that he’s super chill and easy going. He kind of reminds me of Vinny from The Jersey Shore. He’s from New York too.

What do you not like about your date?
Jonah: Things get simplified sometimes, and conversations get dead ended in a way that’s because of mannerisms. She has a way of doing a hand signal that signals the end of a moment. She does a lot of “this is over” hand movements and I’m like, wait!
Josie: It’s not something I don’t like, it’s just that he’s too bougie for me. I’m very down to earth and he’s just kind of like… bougie. And that’s okay. It’s not a dealbreaker. He’s fun.

What’s the most attractive thing about your date?
Jonah: She’s got a great smile. She’s got a really nice, warm feeling and it’s easy to look at her and feel like you’re being heard.
Josie: The eye contact. He’s able to maintain hella eye contact. He’s very attentive to me and my energy.

How would your parents feel about the dater?
Jonah: They would support whatever I decide in my life, and if I wanted to date someone that I like they would support me.
Josie: My mom would enjoy a human like him. She would try to party with him. If he can handle it, that’s good.

What’s been the best part of the date so far?
Jonah: Goofing off and discussing our menu options. Us sharing plates of food rather than getting our own meals. There hasn’t been any lull in chatter.
Josie: The best part of the date has been the food, drinks and the conversation. My favorite food was the enchiladas. They were FIRE. We did the red and green sauce and they are so bomb.

What could make the date better?
Jonah: No paparazzi. That’s all I have.
Josie: I feel like this date is going very well. To be very honest, I’m not feeling the vibes. If I felt a little more of a spark. I don’t feel that at all.

How’s the chemistry on a scale of 1-10?
Jonah: 4.
Josie: For me, the chemistry is at a 5/6.

Where would you like the night to go from here?
Jonah: I don’t see it progressing onwards to another place tonight. I would be open to it in the future, but not tonight.
Josie: I feel like this human and I could go to a bar and have some fun to enjoy ourselves, but after that I would go home.

Will there be a good night hug, kiss or an exchange of numbers?
Jonah: I think we’d exchange numbers, and we’d have a really nice hug. In a prior version of myself, there would have been a good night kiss, but I’m really working on being honest and not just kissing to kiss.
Josie: Definitely a good night hug. I don’t know about the kiss. I’ve been thinking about it…

ROUND 3

The conversation is flowing, the food is amazing and the eye contact is nonstop. Yet the mixed signals keep on flying as both daters don’t really feel a spark. Is there anything that could turn this date around, or are we destined for the friend zone? We leave the daters alone for the evening. The next morning, we check back in to see how things ended.

How was Centro?
Jonah: Great! The food and service were awesome. Shout-out to Bella!
Josie: Centro was great! I loved our waitress, Bella, she was my favorite. The energy of the place and the food was so bomb. I loved it. And the drinks! The Mango Chamoy margarita was my favorite.

What happened after Rooster left?
Jonah: We just wrapped up and said our goodbyes.
Josie: After Rooster left, my date and I walked on Pearl Street for a little and talked about music. That was it. We went home after that.

What was the best part of the date and why?
Jonah: The mystery of meeting someone new, that was fun!
Josie: The best part of the date was the restaurant and getting to hang out with Jonah. We had a great conversation and we talked about music.

Was there a goodnight kiss / hug / exchange of numbers?
Jonah: We traded numbers, had a polite peck on the cheek and parted ways.
Josie: There was a slight peck kiss and then that was it. We exchanged phone numbers.

Will there be a second date?
Jonah: Nope, no spark.
Josie: I don’t think there will be a second date.

Any advice for future Blind Daters?
Jonah: Just be yourself! if it’s meant to be, it’ll click.
Josie: My advice is to have the time of your life and step out of your comfort zone.

Anything you want to end with?
Jonah: Thanks Rooster! Y’all are awesome.
Josie: Shout out to Native Roots! And I’m raising awareness about climate change so get it together, humans!

CONCLUSION

Well, we can’t say we didn’t try. Jonah and Josie left Centro with full bellies and positive vibes. Nonetheless, these two humans are destined for the friend zone. Who knows, maybe they’ll collab on some music and drop the year’s hottest mixtape. Or maybe they’ll run into each other at Centro and fall for each other over enchiladas and margaritas.
