Each month, we set two daters up at a restaurant, give them free food and drinks, then wait for the magic to happen. This month’s Blind Date, we set Natalie and Darian up for a special night at Blo Fish in Boulder.

Round 1

It’s a warm October night as the daters arrive at Blofish sushi looking for love. Darian arrives sporting the mustache, long hair and dangling earrings. Natalie arrives early, dressed appropriately — she hasn’t gone on an official date in almost a year. The daters jump into talking. One large hot sake and a couple beers later, we pull the daters aside to see how it’s going.

How’s it going so far?

N: Good. He knows how to bounce off the conversation.

D: Pretty good I think.

What were your first impressions of the dater?

N: Outgoing, vibrant, good banter.

D: Nice and fun to talk to.

Is this the type of person you’d normally date?

N: No. I’ll be honest.

D: Yeah, I’d say so.

Anything right away that might be a deal breaker?

N: He’s Persian and has strict parents. I already have strict parents of my own.

D: Not really.

Where do you normally meet potential partners?

N: Very, very randomly. At like a Chick-fil-A or a grocery store.

D: The bars or dating apps.

What’s the strangest dating story you have?

N: Twenty minutes into our date, he said I had a cute chin, then bit my chin before we even kissed.

D: This girl kept calling my room super gay.

What are you most nervous about for tonight?

N: Nothing.

D: I’m not that nervous.

Did you get any advice for this date?

N: No, I didn’t but I gave myself the advice not to expect anything. So far it’s going well.

D: Yeah, but it was terrible so I’m not going to follow it.

How did you prepare for the date?

N: Got high, took a nap.

D: Put cool clothes on. Tried to look good.

How did your date dress tonight?

N: He showed up and showed out. He brought it.

D: I like her outfit. It’s a good fit.

Will there be a goodnight kiss?

N: No. I have a three month rule.

D: Maybe.

Round 2

Natalie and Darian find a connection with good conversation and a love for the extremely fresh sashimi at Blofish. Will it be enough to snap Natalie’s one-year dating spell or will Darian be heading back to his online dating apps? Once again, we pull them aside to see how dinner is going.

How was dinner at Blofish?

N: Really good. I’ve never had sushi that was so fresh.

D: The dinner was to die for. We got a lot of sushi and sake and it was all delicious.

Do you guys have anything in common?

N: We’re both very laid back and have strict parents. Very much go with the flow.

D: Music tastes.

What do you like about your date?

N: He’s out there.

D: She was fun to talk to.

What do you not like about your date?

N: He called me bro ten too many times.

D: She was, like, a little too into astrology.

What’s the most attractive thing your date has done so far?

N: Be cutthroat. I love somebody who can tell it as it is.

D: I liked her nose piercing.

How would your parents feel about the dater?

N: They’re very traditional so they wouldn’t want to meet him until I was marrying him.

D: My parents hate nose piercings.

What’s been the best part of the date so far?

N: The food, drinking with him and talking about random things.

D: She let me hit her vape a bunch. It was super nice of her.

What could make the date better?

N: Maybe not having to go home and do an assignment tonight.

D: If we had a joint or something.

How’s the chemistry on a scale of 1 to 10?

N: 2. I don’t like to judge based on first impressions.

D: 6.5

Where would you like the night to go from here?

N: He said he’d be my plug.

D: I think she left. I don’t know.

Round 3

Darian’s rebel approach to life has Natalie interested although her nose ring won’t fly with his parents. But never say never, the conversation is great, they’re rebelling against their parents, and the sushi is some of the best they’ve ever had. Rooster lets the daters hang the rest of the night and we check in the next day.

What happened after Rooster left?

N: I think we felt more comfortable without a third party; the conversation just flowed.

D: We exchanged numbers and went our separate ways.

What was the best part of the date and why?

N: Getting drunk which completely changed the mood of the date.

D: I really enjoyed the food and she was very generous with her vape, which I really appreciated.

Would you have changed anything about the date?

N: I wouldn’t have changed anything.

D: I wish I chose to go on a day when I was not as busy.

Was there a goodnight kiss?

N: No, there wasn’t a kiss.

D: No.

Will there be a second date?

N: I don’t think there will be. We felt more like friends than a blind date.

D: I don’t know.

Any advice for future blind daters?

N: My advice would be to just do it regardless of how nervous you are. It’s a blast.

D: It’s an awesome experience and Rooster takes care of everything. So splurge and have fun!

Conclusion

Natalie has officially been called “bro” one too many times while Darian can’t handle another astrological reading. Good conversation can only go so far before there has to be a spark. Both daters agree there wasn’t much there besides a shared interest in Natalie’s vape pen. We might not have found love this time, but we will… oh yes, we will. Thank you to Blofish for an unbelievable evening of fresh sushi and delicious drinks.
