Blob. Squish. Drip. These are the three categories of Dan Lam’s psychedelic sculptures looking like they just oozed out of a Salvador Dali painting. Like pressing pause on melting slime.
But the blobs aren’t liquid, rather born from an underlying structure in order to create a form, then layered with polyurethane foam, resin, paint, texturized with a cake piping tool and finally given an appropriate name: “Undertone” or “Thigh Gap” — even “Let It All Hang Out.”
With a Masters in Fine Arts in painting and drawing, Lam gravitated towards sculpture after graduating in 2014. “I think it was important for me to do painting and drawing so that I could naturally evolve out of it. It helped me decide that I like sculpture more knowing that painting was a little limiting for me,” she says.
After posting her first drip sculpture in 2015 on Instagram, she blew up with opportunity — a Facebook Artist in Residence, collaborating with Vans, even Miley Cyrus commenting “I want” (a true sign you’ve made it in the 21st Century). Without the social media platform, “I would not be where I am without (it),” she says.
Lam’s out here fulfilling dreams, one squish at a time.
