After 20 years in the business, Rockwell Industry’s Julian Howard brings colorful and bold tattoos to life.

What inspired you to become a tattoo artist, and how did you get started? I grew up drawing and painting all the time. I was definitely the kid in high school that would sharpie designs on my notebooks, shoes and my arms while bored in class. Then I studied graphic design in college, but I didn’t love the idea of spending my life in front of a computer doing advertising for some corporate overlord. I wanted something more personal. And there’s not much more personal than helping people express themselves through tattoos they will wear for the rest of their lives. It’s very rewarding being able to do something so meaningful for your clients.

What’s your favorite type of piece to do, and why? Dinosaurs. Definitely the most fun to draw. Everyone should get more dinosaur tattoos.

Who or what influences your work the most? There’s a lot of amazing artists I follow. Frank Frazetta  and Hajme Sorayama are amazing dynamic artists. Jim Lee and J. Scott Campbell are fantastic illustrators. Recently a lot of my art has been inspired by all the flowers, insects and animals I see in my garden or exploring in the mountains. Nature itself is always amazing inspiration.

How would you describe your tattooing style or aesthetic? Bold and beautiful. I started as an illustrator so I like clean designs that start with strong linework. Then high contrast shading and bold colors. I like designs that are instantly recognizable and will age nicely. I love seeing pieces I did ten years ago that still look bright and distinct.
