From awesome to blah: we're catching up with this past month's latest trends.
THE GOOD
Nudes for a Cause
After seeing how bad the fires were in Australia, 20-year-old Kaylen Ward came up with a great idea. The self-proclaimed “Instagram model” and influencer offered her legion of fans a proposal: donate $10 and she’d send nudes. She quickly raised over $1 million. Soon enough, however, the idea went viral and dozens of others followed suit raising untold millions to help in relief efforts. Some heroes wear nothing.
Bonnaroo Catches Up
It hasn’t been more than a few years since headlines predicted the end of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. And while things look to have stabilized in terms of ticket sales, its recent lineup is what the masses are on now. Turns out, Lizzo is the festival’s first ever female headliner in its 18 year history. Welcome to 2020 Roo.
Dial 988 for Emergencies
The FCC recently approved plans to enact a 3-digit suicide prevention number similar to 911 for emergencies. This is great news, of course, as a supporting study suggests the line would “increase the effectiveness of suicide prevention efforts” nationwide. Though as U.S. government campaigns go, experts estimate it may take up to 18 months for the number to be finalized and working.
THE BAD
Is Segway For Real?
The annual Consumer Electronics Show is always a fascinating rally of the world’s nerdiest minds. Is there a new PlayStation? Will robots become sentient!? How fast can we brush our teeth!?!? However this year brought one sad mama-jama: Segway’s new S-Pod. It’s quite literally an automatic stroller for adults — straight out of Pixar’s WALL-E. The end, it’s sad.
Stretch Armstrong IRL
Dr. Kevin Debiparshad, founding surgeon at The LimbplastX Institute in Las Vegas, claims his two-hour, $76,000 surgical operation is becoming quite popular. It’s a limb-lengthening procedure where patients have nails and screws inserted into the hollow part of their bones and then gradually stretched to gain more height — sometimes up to 6 inches. Yowza.
THE FUGLY
Another ‘Leak’ at Facebook
On December 30, a Facebook executive published an internal memo that meanders around all kinds of bizarre concepts — most notably, he thinks Trump might get reelected because of the social media giant again. What’s strange, however, is Andrew Bosworth’s approach to absolving Facebook of any wrongdoing, ever. It reads like he wanted it “leaked” to save face before the elections. We’re not saying he and the New York Times worked together on this one but … *cue dramatic CSI music*
