Women who post revenge porn are getting thrown in jail, too

Revenge porn stories have always followed the same narrative — a spiteful boyfriend betrays the trust of his lady lover, posts her skimpy photos to his favorite porn site, his blog and his LinkedIn, destroys her marketing career prospects and makes her rue the day she ever went near his shriveled dick.

However, in a number of recent revenge porn cases, this routine script is flipped. More often, women are becoming the culprits. In the 38 U.S. states with criminal laws against revenge porn, they’re being arrested, too.

As sharing someone’s nudes without their consent becomes illegal in more states, more stories begin to surface that challenge the traditional roles of who can be the victim and who can be the perpetrator.

Most recently, there was the 21-year-old New Hampshire woman who posted an indecent photo of an 18-year-old girl, and now faces a felony charge for “non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images.” The indictment accuses her of posting the image “with the intent to harass, intimidate, threaten or coerce.”

When women target other women, their motives are often the same: to threaten a romantic rival. Take the 28-year-old Virginia woman who set out to humiliate her ex-boyfriend’s new partner. In the middle of an argument, the woman stole a naked photo of the new girlfriend and posted it to Facebook, warning the other woman “not to mess with her.”

Women will sometimes target men, as well. For example, there was the 38-year-old Texas woman who retaliated against the man who broke up with her by sharing his naughty pics to Facebook. Police took screenshots of the postings to get a warrant for the woman’s arrest.

Last summer, a 30-year-old Texas woman snapped a photo of her ex-husband naked and asleep, then posted the picture and the accusation that he’s having sex with the nanny to social media for colleagues, friends and family (including their 10-year-old daughter, who follows her mother on Facebook) to see.

They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Ladies are not immune from the desire for revenge, so it’s little surprise that they’d take part in reaping it in the form of naked mirror selfies and erect dick pics.

As the victims work to eliminate their sexy photos from every corner of the Internet, they can take solace in knowing those pictures will be replaced by their perpetrators’ mug shots.
