"Break a leg" never rang so true …
Musicians cancel shows or sit out on the sidelines for a variety of reasons. Some can be as inane and deflective as “restructuring” or “exhaustion,” but others are downright respectable, like having babies or dying. Sometimes there are greats amongst us, however, that literally break legs mid-performance, wrap it up, and come out to finish the friggin’ show.
Last month at a performance in Sweden, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl tried jumping from one part of the stage to the other and fell off, dislocating his ankle and snapping his fibula. In an open letter to fans in the following days, Grohl says it wasn’t in his best interest to quit the show. The backstage medic, Johan, held his leg in place waiting for the cast to arrive from a nearby hospital while Grohl performed. The band has since cancelled all summer shows, but, holy tomato, that’s so rock and roll.*
UPDATE: That's a big negative on cancelling all summers shows, says Dave Grohl. Just a few days ago the inimitable frontman announced the band would in fact be partaking on its North American tour — which begins this Saturday, July 4. The rocking rolliest dude just got a lot more rocking rollier.
