Each month, we set two daters up at a restaurant, give them free food and drinks, then wait for the magic to happen. This month’s Blind Date, we set Rachael and Seth up for a special night at Boulder Social in Boulder, Colorado.
Meet The Daters:
Seth
Law Student
Why are you going on a Rooster Blind Date? My roommates read The Rooster all the time and they signed me up—with my consent.
What do you do for fun? I like to bike, read, ski and do all the seasonal Colorado outdoor things.
What are you best at? I’m best at overthinking situations, such as this.
Do you sing in the shower? No. I sing in the car when I’m alone.
Do you want kids? Yes. I would like more than two. Timeline… uncertain.
Immediate red flags: I try not to date people who are in law school.
One thing you can’t live without: Peanut butter.
Why did your last relationship end: We wanted fundamentally different things in a partner.
Celebrity crush: The Met Gala just happened right? I’m inspired by Doja Cat.
Guilty pleasure: Getting chips and guac at Chipotle.
Rachael
Law Student
Why are you going on a Rooster Blind Date? I’m a big fan of the article. I especially love it when it goes very wrong.
What do you do for fun? I like to read, cook, and volunteer.
What are you best at? You don’t want me to say legal research. I’m really good at doing chicken noises.
What do you suck at? I’m not a very good dancer. Enthusiastic, but bad.
Do you sing in the shower? Yes. Come to my house right after I get home and it is opera hour.
Do you want kids? Yes, but not anytime soon. I’ve got a five-year window after I settle down, so it depends on where genetic testing is in 5 years.
Immediate red flags: Questionable political leanings.
One thing you can’t live without: Actually, or spiritually? Actually: a slew of prescription medications that I’m very dependent on. Spiritually: trees.
Why did your last relationship end: He was in a Christian cult.
Guilty pleasure: Historical romance novels.
ROUND 1
Rachael and Seth arrive promptly at 5:30pm. Rachael shows up cool and
casual, Seth arrives with a smile and a good attitude. Unbeknownst to Rooster, both daters are law students in the middle of finals week. Could this be a first date that ends in a legally binding contract of love? Or will Rooster get sued into oblivion? Only time will tell… but we’re guessing the latter.
How’s it going so far?
S: It’s going well. She’s great. I recognized her when I walked in. We had a class together last fall. She sat in front of me so I don’t think she recognized me, but I recognized her right away.
R: Fantastic. It’s so weird that you pulled two law students. I’m a little embarrassed that I had no memory of this person. But he sat behind me, and if you sit behind me, you’re non-existent to me. It was my dream to meet someone in law school.
What were your first impressions of the dater?
S: She’s nice and cool to talk to. It’s a different context. There’s not really an opportunity to meet in class so you only can only get to know them from when the professor calls on them. She’s not what I expected.
R: He is really handsome. Don’t tell him I said that… or do. I’m very surprised: there are so many hot people in law school. I think it’s part of the requirements.
Is this the type of person you’d normally date?
S: I don’t think so, no. I feel like I tend to prefer people who are more outdoorsy than she seems to be.
R: I think so. I wouldn’t say no if I saw his face on Tinder. Unless he was holding a fish. Unless it was a genuinely impressive fish. You need to be holding a sea bass otherwise get out of here.
Anything right away that might be a deal breaker?
S: Deal breakers? No … law school is flagged. I’m competitive by nature and if I have the same background of someone it can become too competitive too quickly and it doesn’t end well for that reason.
R: Unsavory political views, or a substance abuse problem. We get a lot of lectures about that in law school like we are children. He hasn’t expressed either of those.
Where do you normally meet potential partners?
S: Through all avenues. Hence why I’m on a blind date with a magazine. Around and through friends. I’m not on dating apps. I have been in the past, but it’s not like The Rooster.
R: Tinder. Just Tinder. I really don’t date. I’m in the belief that my dating life is in God’s hands and I’m not helping at all. And God’s probably not thrilled about it.
What’s the strangest dating story you have?
S: One time at the end of the date I went to kiss the girl I was on a date with, and she acted like it wasn’t an attempt at a first kiss. It was pretty weird. We obviously didn’t kiss.
R: Besides the fact that I went out with a guy that was in a Christian cult and had to listen to his Christian cult podcast? I think that’s it. It was so bad that I full on changed religions.
What are you most nervous about for tonight?
S: In some way I’m most nervous about how the write ups are going to appear in The Rooster. And just who it would be with and how it would go.
R: I knew I was getting a free meal so as long as you didn’t bring in a serial killer I would be fine. Probably people would think I’m a weird person, but I am so that wouldn’t be incorrect.
Did you get any advice for this date?
S: No. My roommates encouraged me to have fun. I have a roommate who’s secretly lurking around. I went to the bathroom earlier and he appeared next to me at the urinal.
R: My mom told me it was really weird that I asked about NDAs and media releases. I assumed you wanted a release! She said don’t be weird and just be yourself. Those two things are not the same advice!
How did you prepare for the date?
S: I didn’t.
R: I did put a clean shirt on and I did my makeup. I actually washed my hair last night, and even shaved my ankles. Actually, all the way up to the knee.
ROUND 2
Wowzers. Seth’s biggest deal breaker is if someone is in law school, and Rachael would love to meet a fine lawyer-to-be in one of her classes. Can a pro bono meal sway the jury, or can Rachael overturn his opinion of his fellow classmates?
How’s it going
S: It’s going well. Racheal is great. She’s a very nice person. I think that the law school connection makes for a good conversation, but it also isn’t really my cup of tea—in a nice way.
R: Fantastic. The date is going fantastic.
What have you been talking about?
S: We’re talking about law. And there’s a certain effort to not talk about law, so were talking about law adjacent things. And movies.
R: We had a very deep conversation about the role of punishments and society in contest to the 2008 collapse and historical figures and their views of emancipation… we were having a very intellectual discussion .
Do you two have anything in common?
S: Yeah, I mean, besides being students we both read a bit. There hasn’t been a lot of things to talk about. She doesn’t think that hiking is a hobby. We kind of talked about that longer than I wanted to…
R: We were talking about getting our wisdom teeth out. We’re both small town kids. We are both in law school.
What do you like about your date?
S: She’s really smart and she’s thoughtful. Introspective it seems.
R: I can’t say that he’s fucking hot that’s going to be weird in the magazine. He’s lovely, very smart and a nice guy. I have no complaints. This is going so well! In fact, I’m terrified that it’s going so well.
What do you not like about your date?
S: There’s nothing I dislike about her; I just don’t think we’re a good match based on the law school thing. The hiking thing is a point of contention, but everyone has different options on things.
R: The fact that I might have to see him again if this goes poorly. If things don’t work out were still going to have to connect
on LinkedIn.
What’s the most attractive thing about your date?
S: I think she’s really smart. And gets generally intentional about caring about the things that she does.
R: You want me to pick just one? He’s very handsome and he’s literally perfect. His hobbies are reading biographies about the founding fathers.
How would you parents feel about the dater?
S: My parents would like her. She’s different from other girls I’ve dated in the past.
R: Oh they would LOVE him. He drinks Old Fashioneds; he has a chemical engineering degree. He’s a basically a better version of my father.
What’s been the best part of the date so far?
S: I feel like I sort of knew of Rachael before coming here, but only from seeing her in class. So, getting to know her and talk to her and have a more operational connection.
R: I can’t pick a singular moment. The foods been good. Excellent conversation.
What could make the date better?
S: It is super rainy out.
R: I think there’s a dessert menu. That’s the one thing I’m holding out for.
How’s the chemistry on a scale of 1-10?
S: It’s probably a 6.7. She’s a nice person.
R: I feel like it’s great but I can’t tell if I’ve made a great friend, or if this is a job interview or a date at this point.
Where would you like the night to go from here?
S: I think it would be great to continue to have a nice conversation. We’ll probably end up running into each other in the future.
R: I have a very early bedtime. Ideally I like to be in bed by 8:30pm. Not asleep! Just in bed resting.
Will there be a good night hug, kiss or an exchange of numbers?
S: Probably a hug would be nice. I don’t expect there to be an exchange of numbers, but who knows.
R: I think there’s going to be a hug since there was a hello hug. At the very least, I’m going to insist we friend each other
on LinkedIn.
ROUND 3
Well, it’s not going great. Maybe deep down Seth really wanted Rachael to turn around and say hello during class. Hopefully Rachael won’t be too busy daydreaming about Seth being in one of her steamy romance novels during her next exam. After the date adjourned, we checked in the next day to see the final judgment.
How was Boulder Social?
S: Boulder Social was great. It’s a great place to go on a first date.
R: Lovely. Good place, good food and it’s not too loud which is everything I look for in a restaurant.
What happened after Rooster left?
S: After Rooster left, we got dessert and we went our separate ways. My friends came to pick me up.
R: We left pretty soon after you left. It seemed like he arranged a prior pickup. We chatted and finished dessert. We got the S’mores Ice Cream and we exchanged numbers.
What was the best part of the date and why?
S: The best part of the date was the Old Fashioned at the restaurant.
R: He’s literally so perfect on paper. I can’t emphasize how much fun this was. The whole thing was lovely.
Was there a goodnight kiss?
S: There was not. There was a hug and we exchanged numbers.
R: No. There was a hug.
Will there be a second date?
S: Probably not, but that hasn’t been decided yet. I haven’t thought that far ahead yet.
R: I hope so.
Any advice for future Blind Daters?
S: Just show up with an open mind because you never know who it could be with.
R: I think everything that is usually covered in the article like, “be open, have fun, be yourself!” Worst case scenario it’s a free meal.
CONCLUSION
The verdict is in, sort of. Although it does not seem like a match made in law school heaven, we expect both plaintiffs to be friendly the next time they are summoned to court. Until next time, we will continue our hunt to find love.
