The Wooking For Love show founder talks about what’s to the come with the viral show.
When Love is Blind made its way to Denver, one mad genius saw an opportunity—not for blind love but for true love, wook love. Beyond the earth colors, geodesic domes and psytrance stages, LaRue Allegretto knew he was onto something when his satirical TikTok video went viral with over 1 million views. Since then, he’s raised funds, organized a production team, mapped episodes, set auditions and received a mind numbing 1,500 candidate submissions. For what you ask? For the chance to have two wooks come together in PLUR. We talked with the Wooking For Love producer to get an idea of what’s to come, how wook-y things will get and above all, why he stole our camping chair.
When was the moment you knew that you HAD to make a reality dating show about Denver wooks? What sparked this ambition?
When I saw the City Cast Denver post about Love is Blind, I knew what had been an inside joke with my friends needed to come to life. To be honest, my first video was sort of a joke itself, but the flood of support made it impossible to ignore all the potential there.
What percentage of the show would you say is going to be satire versus genuine hunting for romance?
The circumstances will be somewhat satirical in their nature, a bit meta from time to time, but we plan on keeping most of the contestant interactions fully authentic! This is a dating show where the contestants are truly seeking their others. We’re casting for real, authentic wookery so we don’t have to manufacture the story. Wooks are notorious vout-of-pocket thoughts and interactions, so we believe if we open the pit, they’re going to pick up the hoops on their own, so to speak.
What criteria are you looking for from the applicants that would make them a perfect contestant for the show?
Eccentricity is the main thing. If you’ve ever been cornered in a camp chair by a wook with a never-ending story connected to a bunch of subtle context you simply don’t have the information to understand, get them on our show! We’re looking for experience in the community, a true passion for the lifestyle. Aesthetics will play a role, but we want someone who’s really Wooking for love and comes to us from that place of genuine, unique otherness that brings us together and draws us to don the proverbial pashmina and join in the collective.
Do you feel like Wooks are misunderstood on the internet?
I think everyone has their own definition of what any identifying term means. I think many may use it in a derogatory fashion, associating it with laziness or irresponsibility, but we’re making it clear that our operational definition of a wook is someone who lives, loves, and breathes the music and festival lifestyle. Plenty of those people work very hard, act responsibly, and are prepared and considerate of others. I think those people can still get into wookery. We’re also planning on defining the “subgenres” of wooks from the transcendental wooks to business wooks to the flatbill bassheads.
What is something that people don’t know about the show right now, but they really should?
Of all the things I’ve told the audience and contestants about in my TikToks and through interviews, it’s the thing I haven’t told you about you should be excited for. There is a key aspect of the show that can’t be revealed before release that I think really bumps up the stakes, but you’re going to have to tune in to find out what that is. Otherwise, know that the Valentine’s Day Wooking For Love Audition Event with Rooster Magazine and Nova Studios is going to be one you do not want to miss, whether you applied online, want to tryout in person, join in the Rooster Magazine Blind Date activities, or just want to come support and see some incredible music and meet the team behind the magic.
