Each month, we set two daters up at a restaurant, give them free food and drinks, then wait for the magic to happen. This month’s Blind Date, we set Wesley and Jade up for a special night at Twisted Pine Brewing Company in Boulder.

Meet the daters:

Wesley | Local Government | Capricorn

Why are you going on a Rooster Blind Date? My roommate signed me up and I thought it would be fun.
What do you do for fun?  I rock climb, play D&D, trivia.
What are you best at? Not answering questions! I’m not good at anything I think, anymore!
What do you suck at? Answering questions!
Do you sing in the shower? Absolutely! I was Dolly Parton this morning, Usher over the weekend after the Super Bowl.
What are you most grateful for? My family and I live in a beautiful place and wake up every day and see mountains. That’s pretty special.
Do you want kids? I do. About 2.4.
Immediate red flags: A profound lack of curiosity.
One thing you can’t live without: I cannot live without good friends.
Why did your last relationship end:   We just grew apart.
Celebrity crush:  It is either Tessa Thompson or Jason Momoa.

Jade | Facilities Coordinator at Google | Pisces

Why are you going on a Rooster Blind Date? It will be the third time that I’m in Rooster, and I read them every month. My first was when I was 20, underage, at Lazy Dog. The 2nd time, I wrote an email complaining about the horoscopes and you published it. I wanted to try to make it a hat trick.
What do you do for fun?  I go to concerts. I like to see jam bands, go to The Fox and Boulder Theater a lot. It’s really dirty but I’ve seen one band 101 times, The Magic Beans.
What are you best at? I’m good at talking to people.
What do you suck at? I don’t sleep enough.
Do you sing in the shower? Not really. I listen to comedy podcasts a lot.
Do you want kids? I do. One to zero.
Immediate red flags: If they talk over you.
One thing you can’t live without: My friends.  I know that’s cheesy!
Why did your last relationship end: He was a dick.
Celebrity crush: Andy Samberg. He’s been my celebrity crush since Lonely Island.

Round 1

Wesley and Jade arrive exactly at the same time; both terrified about last month’s trainwreck of a date. We love Jade’s cow hat and Wes’ fade. They order a round of beers and two appetizers and anxiously sit down to make their first introductions. We let them drink and eat while lurking in the background, optimistic that this one doesn’t end in a … well, you know.

Round 2

First round is in the books and the conversation is flowing as well as the beers at Twisted Pine. Wes likes that Jade’s hat and nail polish match. Jade likes that Wes isn’t last month’s dater. As the daters settle in with appetizers and pizza, we wait until their done eating to get more gossip.

How are things going now?

W: It’s going really well. We’re having a nice time and good conversations. She seems pretty cool!
J: It’s good. Honestly. We’ve had a really good conversation.

What have you been talking about?

W: Everything under the sun. Movies, shared interests, career stuff, all over the place.
J: All sorts of things. We talked about movies, and how we both like to go to the movies. we were talking about the new Dune movie coming out and we both loved the first one and we want go see the second one.

Do you two have anything in common?
W: We have some similar shared interests. Movies, tattoos, tattoos in general.

J: We have a lot in common. We both like a lot of movies, and talked about tattoos for a long time, my dad was a D&D master and he plays Dungeons and Dragons.

What do you like about your date?

W: She’s a lot of fun. She’s easy to talk to. She’s funny, very funny. And cute obviously! She’s very cute!!
J: He’s easy to talk to; considering that this is an awkward situation. I think he’s attractive. He’s cute.

What do you not like about your date?
W: I think we’re both coming out of recent illness, so there’s a little bit of coughing that puts a bit of a damper on this, but she seems great overall.

J: I think that we are different people in terms of who we hang out with, but that not something I don’t like about him.

What’s the most attractive thing about your date?
W: She has really nice eyes. They are kind of blue grey. Oh god, if they are not blue you have to erase this!
J: He’s an interesting person. Every time we ask each other questions, he answers in a way that I wasn’t expecting—in a good way. I like going on this date with four people, it’s not uncomfortable at all!

How would your parents feel about the dater?

W: I think they would like her. She’s got a good energy and I think they would appreciate that.

J: They would love him. One thing we have in common is that we’re both going to see the solar eclipse with our moms.  My mom is a planetary geologist who works for NASA. She loves the solar eclipse and my mom would nerd out by him going to see the eclipse.

What’s been the best part of the date so far?

W: I was really nervous coming into this and it’s been nice to have someone to talk with who I click with really nicely.

J: It’s a good experience. It’s nice meeting someone new.

What could make the date better?

W: Juggling. No, don’t put that in!  I’m not an avid juggler. I don’t know why that’s where my brain went to. I am having a really nice time so I can’t think of anything to make the night better.

J: Not being at a spot where my friends work! But I’m still happy that I am here.

How’s the chemistry on a scale of 1-10?

W: It’s a 7-8. Pretty solid.

J: It’s a 7-8.

Where would you like the night to go from here?

W: I would like her to get a nice night of sleep because it seems like she’s been sick for a while. Otherwise, I would have liked to suggest going to another place and getting another beverage.

J: I would like to hug and exchange numbers for sure.

Will there be a good night hug, kiss or an exchange of numbers?

W: I think I’m going to get a solid hug out of this. And I hope we exchange numbers.

J: Two out of three for sure. No kiss, probably.

How’s it going so far?

W: It seems to be really good! We’re having a good conversation and she seems to be a good person.

J: It’s going good. It’s not as awkward as I thought it was going to be. Not as bad as last month’s date! I asked myself if I should bring mace?

What were your first impressions of
your date?

W: Don’t be weird, don’t be weird, don’t be weird! She’s very pretty, and initial impression: I like that her hat and nail polish matched. I really like that and it’s a nice, silly thing to like.

J: He’s cute, he’s nice and a little soft-spoken. We both walked in at the same time for peak awkwardness. I could tell it was him when I walked in but I didn’t want to say anything.

Is this the type of person you’d
normally date?

W: Probably not. I am a very shy person and she seems very outgoing, and I have a hard time meeting people where they are at.

J: I think we definitely have things in common, but I don’t know if we would meet each other organically. But there is a possibility.

Where do you normally meet potential partners?

W: Nowhere. (Laughs). I am on dating apps, but they are all just a black hole of attention and time, and I don’t do well on the apps.

J: At concerts or bars, but I’m trying to experiment more.

What are you most nervous about
for tonight?

W: I was concerned about coming off like a jerk like the guy last month. I was like, okay, I have one goal, it’s don’t be an asshole.

J: The whole situation, and I also have a cough so I don’t want to cough all over him. Luckily, he said he’s also getting over being sick so it’s all good.

Did you get any advice for this date?

W: My roommate spent the whole night telling me how to talk to humans. This is what you should wear. I think they did an okay job to prepare me. They are working with a hard subject; I’m an awkward human being. I didn’t expect you to hit me up at all. It was a complete surprise.

J: Yeah! Bring mace from last month’s date! Shout out Yosefa!

How did you prepare for the date?

W: I watched romance movies, The Bee Movie in particular, and I got all the best pickup lines like ‘do you like jazz?’

J: I was working so I kind of just rushed over here. I made sure to put on deodorant. I stopped at my house just to get deodorant.

How did your date dress tonight?

W: She dressed well. She looks comfortable, in a good way.

J: Good. Casual, flannel. I like the blue. I think he’s wearing blue.

Round 3

Redemption! We were worried we had lost our mojo after last month’s disaster date; but there is still a sliver of hope left for another Rooster love story. We sneak out as Jade and Wesley close down Twisted Pine, deep in conversation about dungeons and eclipses. We check in the next day hopeful for a happy update.

How was Twisted Pine?

W: Twisted pine was great. Good atmosphere, great food, staff was super cool. I’m definitely going it add it to my list of Boulder favorites.

J: Twisted Pine was great! The food and beer were good, I liked the cherry sour.

What happened after Rooster left?

W: We didn’t stick around terribly long.  We finished up our meal and wished each other a good night.

J: We finished our beers and talked a bit longer, then went our separate ways.

What was the best part of the date?

W: It was really nice meeting a new, cool person and having a great conversation. It’s not often that you click with somebody like that.

J: The whole experience of trying something new was super fun, and meeting Wes was great too.

Was there a goodnight hug, kiss or exchange of numbers?

W: We did trade numbers. And there was a hug.

J:  There was an exchange of numbers and a hug.

Will there be a second date?

W: I think so. Tentative yes. We talked about going to see a movie.

J: I would like there to be! We have tentative plans for the movies in a few weeks.

Any advice for future Blind Daters?

W: Don’t be a jerk and come with an open mind.

J: It’s not as scary as it seems to be honest, but that probably depends on the person you’re on the date with.

Anything to end with?

W: Thank you! It was great night and I’m happy that I did it!

J: Thanks for the experience and the free drinks!

Conclusion

Just when you thought Rooster had lost their match making magic, Wesley and Jade revive our never-ending search for true love with their successful date. They both agreed to a second date at the movies. We’re back baby! We’re on to the next date to see if we can find love.
