Unless you're talking about the results of a pap smear, "normal" is boring. Looking at things straight-on, as they are, is too simple; it's only when you begin to see familiar things through a new lens, that it reawakens their potency and forces you to experience them in an original way. And original views, children, are basically the only things that differentiate you from the people sitting on either side of you in a cubicle. That's why we were so drawn to Adam Lister's pixelated representations of classic and pop art.

Made of series of geometric watercolor blocks, Adam's paintings aim to break down, rearrange, and reference iconic imagery so that you see things not for what they are literally, but what the could be. That's a pretty rad concept: make your own assumptions about it, and see things how you want them to be. M for 'Meta."

"I'm curious about the deciphering and translation of visual language, and the way we read and understand the things that we see," he told us. "These pictures are like puzzles, carefully taken apart and then pieced back together to reveal the subject.  By referencing classical works of art, and nostalgic scenes and objects, I find these works to be transformations of images that have a collective familiarity."

That, and the juxtaposition of rigid drawing and soft washes of color are an interesting combination; a funny marriage of delicate and harsh that turns the meaning of the image on its little image head.

So, without further holdup … feast your eyes on these bad boys.
