LOCAL

Motion Trap // PaleBlueDot

Release Date: May 5, 2015

Motion Trap is exactly why we get excited when local bands send us music. With its own interpretation of danceable psych-rock, the quartet manages to create fanciful rhythms with one of the most important ingredients: fun. Also employing the help of local hip-hop emcee Turner Jackson, the album has something for everyone, be it a hip-hop head, jam bro or just general music lover. If nothing else, listen to our favorite, “Less Is More” — you’ll thank us.

In The Whale // Full Nelson EP

Release Date: April 22, 2015

If you think you’ve seen two musicians with more intensity anywhere then you’re sorely mistaken. Taking a page out of its hard-working ethos, the new EP from In The Whale is as blistering and energetic as a short collection can be. The duo of Nate and Eric are rock and roll — there’s no question about that. But don’t get too comfortable throwing your body around into strangers, because (spoiler alert) the final track “Mail” dramatically shifts tempo and highlights an intriguing facet to the rising act.

NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL

MEW // + –

Release Date: April 28

MEW does things different. It always has. And with the release of “+ -” the band shows it likely always will. Delivered in its distinctively pitchy vocals over thematic and subdued dream-like harmonies, the first album from the group in six years embodies a straight vortex of musical ambition. Albums like this one will forever be timeless, because there aren’t any present day cultural references to define it. Sit down Kry-Baby Kanye — the best album of the year has already been made.

PPL MVR // PPL MVR

Release Date: April 20, 2015

The hell is going on here? Nobody yet knows who the three members of PPL MVR are aside from a back-story of the creatures being some sort of ancient species who dig drum-heavy rock and squelching guitar-riffs. Some weirdos online with their tin foil hats tied securely in place think its Brand New in disguise (hint: we’re the weirdos and love our hats), but it’s all speculation. Nonetheless, the EP hits with flavorful rock and plays well into the unknown fantasy.
