LOCAL

In the Whale // Nate

Keeping fans on their toes is mandatory to maintaining any kind of staying power in the local arena. In the Whale knows this and keeps dishing it out. Quickly coming off of a release late last year, "Nate" is the companion album to the "Eric" EP, and is the musical equivalent to kicking a robust man in the shins with stilettoes. It's loud, brazen and sure to kick start the most apathetic of circulatory systems.

The Photo Atlas // Press Send to Detonate

If ever there were an act deserving of a breakout album, it's these gentlemen. The members of The Photo Atlas are long-time elders of the local scene and have amassed a formidable catalog to boot. They continue the extended reign with their newest seven-inch EP "Press Send to Detonate." It's built around the frenetic charges of songs past and carries the same dancey, punkey, thrashy vigor the band's fans are so totes in love with.

INDEPENDENT

White Morning // Sleep Paralysis

Scott Miller, the lone wolf of electronic/experimental act White Morning, is one of those artists who built his hear around all types of music. He started White Morning as a daily diary of sorts in songwriting and utilized the outlet as a way to experiment with varying sounds. "Sleep Paralysis" is a quick three-song, instrumental introduction to the ultimate vision and its tantamount to some of the best electronic producers in the industry.

Manchester Orchestra // COPE

Nostalgia is one tricky bitch of a beast. It ruins everything you've ever loved in life and it will build chips on your shoulders deeper than irrigation trenches in Dubai. While the new "COPE" album is on par with some of the greater works released this year from other artists, it still didn't hold the amazement of "Mean Everything to Nothing" did for us in 2008. Life has lost all meaning.
