Jeronimo Gauna has a deep appreciation for many various forms of artistic expression, but ultimately it is the combination of architecture and painting that really ignites his soul. Coming from a world of architectural design, the Miami Beach based artist mastered the technical skills and principles that would lay the foundation for his artistic endeavors. That, combined with his world travel experiences, shaped his perspective and infused his artistic creations with a global essence and a desire to “stain the world.”

What are some things you can’t work without?

I’m a person who has a certain affinity with technology and I like to use the tools that we currently have at our disposal to increase my creativity and scope of action. When it comes to my creative process, there are two indispensable elements that have become deeply intertwined with my artistic journey. First of all, my iPad has become an integral part of my workflow. With it I have a number of powerful programs at my disposal, with which I can bring my ideas to life with unparalleled ease and precision. Whether it’s designing, displaying my portfolio, presenting mockups, or sharing sketches with clients and fellow artists, my iPad is the gateway to a world of limitless possibilities.

Yet even in this digital age, I find solace in the simplicity and tangibility of traditional media. When circumstances dictate and my iPad is out of reach, I turn to the timeless combination of a pencil and a sheet of paper, or a spray can and a wall, or maybe a brush and a canvas. The act of sketching and drawing by hand allows me to access a deeper level of creativity, where imperfections and spontaneity intertwine to create unique and authentic works of art.

In essence, my creative process thrives on the harmonious balance between the technological marvel of my iPad / Computer and the stark simplicity of some scratch object. Each element brings its own set of advantages, allowing me to navigate through different creative realms and deliver my artistic vision with maximum clarity and impact.

What time of day do you tend to feel most creative?

Without a doubt, I find myself most creative during the nighttime hours. Perhaps this inclination developed after spending countless nights immersed in architectural projects during my studies. Additionally, I must admit that I struggle to greet the early morning hours with enthusiasm (laughs).

During the nighttime, the stillness and tranquility allow my mind to wander freely and explore the depths of creativity. It’s a time when distractions are minimized, and I can fully immerse myself in the creative process. Whether I’m sketching, brainstorming new ideas, or refining my artistic concepts, the nighttime provides a conducive environment for channeling my imagination.

While the nocturnal hours hold a special place in my creative routine, I firmly believe that creativity knows no boundaries of time. Inspiration can strike at any moment, and I always strive to capture those fleeting sparks of genius whenever they arise.

Can you give us a little bit of your background and how you became an artist?

I have always cultivated a deep appreciation for various forms of artistic expression, but it is the combination of architecture and painting that really ignites my soul.

From a very young age, I knew that I wanted to merge my love of art and architecture into my work. This aspiration led me to pursue a formal education in architecture at the National University of Architecture and Urbanism of Northeast Argentina. During my time there, I delved into the intricate world of architectural design, mastering the technical skills and principles that would lay the foundation for my artistic endeavors.

Throughout my life, I have also embarked on transformative journeys around the world. My journey has taken me from Chaco, Argentina, to my current base in Miami, United States. Traveling to different countries and immersing myself in various cultures provided me with invaluable experiences and a new perspective on art.

Today, as an artist, I find great joy and inspiration in bringing my imaginative visions to life through a process of expressing reality through my lines and drawings. Each line is a reflection of my training as a person and professional, perfectly combining color and composition together with experiences and feelings. My artwork conveys a harmonious fusion of artistic expression and design sensibilities. I find myself continually inspired by the intricate connections between the built environment and culture. I seek that each piece, drawing or design is created out of a deep appreciation for the harmonious interplay of concept and aesthetics.

How do you like to describe your style of art?

Throughout my career, I have explored various mediums, from murals to studio art, always with the goal of pushing creative boundaries and evolving my practice. My work is based on the principles of minimalism and post-painterly abstraction, but I’m always exploring new ways to express myself and communicate my vision.

My aesthetic world is inspired by a combination between fine art and design, creating a balance of contradictions in my pieces and evoking emotions in my audience using traditional and modern techniques, such as the use of digital tools in combination with traditional painting techniques. The term “Dragon Wings” refers to the intricate patterns and lines that are a distinctive feature of my work. These lines and patterns convey a sense of chaos, but ultimately find beautiful order through bold, vibrant lines to create a sense of movement and fluidity.

I would like to say that I am pursuing my dream of “staining the world” and my lines are the vehicle of my journey. In turn, the sights, sounds and colors of the world became my muse, shaped my artistic style and infused my creations with a global essence.

You did the illustrative work for this year’s GoPro Mountain Games 2023 in Vail. How did that opportunity come about and what was that experience like for you?

The 2023 GoPro Mountain Games in Vail provided me with a unique opportunity to combine my illustrative skills with my passion for outdoor sports and adventure. This opportunity came about thanks to my friend Allie Yazel, who shared the news of the contest to find this year’s illustration, so what I did was submit a proposal in which I put all my creative power. A few weeks later, the dream came true and my illustration proposal was chosen as the winning design for the official GMG 2023 poster. Through my artwork, I set out to capture the energy and excitement of gaming while showcasing the natural beauty and the reality of the environment through my lines.

The poster presents the magic of the city of Vail and its community in a summer context through the geometry created by my “Dragon Wings” in a sleek and modern style that captivates the attention of sports enthusiasts and lovers of art alike. It has been truly gratifying to witness the spread of my work, from an exhibition at Denver International Airport organized by DEN Arts to the streets of the city, newspapers and digital platforms.

Being a part of such a high profile event and seeing my lines along my beloved Vail has been an extraordinary experience. Collaborating with the Vail Foundation team (competition planners) allowed me to showcase my artistic vision to a wider audience and connect with people who share a passion for sports and art. The exposure and recognition gained through this project has opened the doors to new opportunities and collaborations, fueling my creative drive and inspiring me to continue to push the boundaries of my craft.

What are you most proud of so far in your career?

It brings me great joy to know that my artistic endeavors have resonated with others, forging a deep and meaningful bond through the power of creativity. I take great pride in my art’s ability to make connections and create memorable moments with people. It is the relationships with people and places that really make me proud of what I have achieved in my profession. The lines I draw and the images I create serve as conduits for positive energy, guiding me on the right path and allowing me to leave a lasting impression on those involved with my work. Witnessing the profound impact my art has had on people, whether it be evoking emotions, sparking inspiration, or fostering a sense of connection, fills me with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction. It’s a constant reminder of the transformative power of art and its ability to touch hearts and transcend borders.

Additionally, I’m proud of the journey I have embarked on as an artist, constantly pushing myself to explore new artistic territory, experiment with different techniques, and push the limits of my own creativity. Every step forward, every artistic endeavor undertaken, is a testament to my commitment to growth and self-expression. It is through this ongoing exploration that I continue to evolve as an artist and expand the horizons of my craft.

What are some other types of activities you enjoy doing when you aren’t creating?

When I’m not in my “creative mode,” I take time to engage in activities that nurture my well-being and health. On the one hand, I enjoy recreational activities that provide relaxation and enjoyment, I really like going out dancing, especially at electronic parties and visual shows, and on the other hand, I find comfort in sports and physical activity. Throughout the week, I make it a point to incorporate outdoor exercise sessions, often accompanied by visits to the beach. Additionally, I have a great affinity for walking the streets, either to explore the city or visit art galleries, always in the company of my friends. I find immense joy in sharing moments and experiences with like-minded people who inspire and encourage me. These activities not only help me rejuvenate and relax, but also allow me to gain new perspectives and viewpoints that often find their way into my creative work.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your profession?

The path of an artist, aiming to make a significant impact, is not without obstacles. For me, the journey has been further complicated by being away from my family and immersing myself in a foreign land. Language barriers, cultural disparities, and the need to establish my presence in a new social and professional landscape have posed significant challenges.

However, my passion for the craft continues to drive me. I have embraced these challenges, channeling my efforts into networking, forging connections with other artists and galleries, and consistently showcasing my work to a wider audience.

It’s important to recognize that the path of an artist is demanding, requiring unwavering dedication, perseverance and personal sacrifice, with no guaranteed results. However, driven by my deep passion for art and an unwavering determination to succeed, I intend to realize my dream of prospering and enjoying my life in a unique way.

After all, it’s all about enjoying the beautiful journey!

Where do you find inspiration for fresh ideas?

Fresh ideas and inspiration flow from various sources to me. I consider myself a keen observer, always absorbing and analyzing my surroundings. This keen sense of awareness allows me to find inspiration in everyday life. Whether it’s taking a walk through the streets of the city, immersing myself in different contexts and situations, or delving into the digital realm through social media platforms like Instagram or Pinterest, as well as design and illustration websites, I’m in constant search of new stimuli to ignite my creative spark.

The world around me and the diversity of experiences, both offline and online, serve as a source of inspiration, ensuring a continuous flow of fresh ideas. Always looking for new concepts to give life to new forms through my lines.

What do you hope to accomplish next?

One of the main aspirations I have for the future is to dive into bigger wall projects and embark on exciting collaborations that will really push the limits of my artistic abilities. The prospect of undertaking large-scale projects that integrate my passion for design, storytelling, and visual arts fills me with purpose and excitement. I look forward to the possibility of the call to participate in mural festivals around the world, bridging cultures through art and creating transformative experiences that resonate with people on a deep level. Whether bringing abandoned urban spaces to life or infusing public places with a vibrant tapestry of color, shape, and narrative, I aspire to make a positive impact through my art.

One of the main aspirations that moves my soul is the opportunity to visit Argentina, my native country, and make my artistic mark grow on its walls. There is an incredible desire within me to connect with my roots, to contribute to the artistic tapestry of the places that have shaped me. The walls and my friends eagerly await the strokes of my brush, inviting me to express the stories, memories and emotions that have been engraved in my heart. The thought of sharing this creative journey with my people fills me with a deep sense of anticipation and joy.

In this quest to explore new frontiers, both in my homeland and in the welcoming embrace of the United States, I strive to leave an indelible mark through my artistic pursuits. By channeling my passion, skills, and creativity, I aspire to forge connections, inspire dialogue, and evoke a sense of wonder in those who encounter my pieces. With each brushstroke, I hope to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary canvases that serve as a testament to the power of art and the human spirit.

Any upcoming projects or events we can look forward to?

I’m currently involved in various projects with other artists, and we are excited to start hosting our own shows in Miami and potentially expanding to other cities. I am also actively looking for new opportunities to create illustrations and murals as it is something I really enjoy. Perhaps a reader of Rooster magazine may have an idea or connection that can help bring these visions to life, I would love to do artwork for dispensaries and skate brands!

Looking ahead and considering the end of the year, I am especially excited about the prospect of showing my work during Art Basel. I currently have the opportunity to live in Miami, one of the venues for this prestigious event that attracts art enthusiasts from all over the world, and the idea of exhibiting my art in that context is truly inspiring.
