Well this is awkward …

The release of “Straight Outta Compton” — the famed biopic about one of the most prolific groups to come out of (and pretty much create) the gangster rap era — has one unfortunate downside. The movie won’t be played in Compton theaters, not now, not tomorrow, and probably not for a very long time.

Because it has no theaters …

“It’s a low-income area, it’s been heavily disinvested in,” University of Southern California professor of sociology Manuel Pastor tells CBS Los Angeles. “When you live in a community that doesn’t have that kind of retail, it’s a sign that the community is devalued, and people within the community feel devalued.”

While the obvious move for those wishing to see it would be to go a few blocks outside of the city’s limit, the lack of an entertainment district highlights today what some of the issues were the group faced decades ago, trying to make it big in an industry that wanted nothing to do with them.

It’s almost like an independent magazine full of piss and vinegar swimming upstream against fat, hungry conglomerated fish. It would seem, we’re kind of like the N.W.A. of media …

To help, Dr. Dre has said he’ll send all of the proceeds from his new album “Compton” to the city to fund a youth center for the arts. The movie itself made over $60 million in its first weekend alone, doubling production costs — think the city will see any of that?
