We don’t think we’re going too far out on a limb here when we say that after their 2009 travel to splitsville, Travie McCoy received a far better end of the deal than did his side-project in Katy Perry. The duo met and dated during the more substantially culture affirming Warped Tour and subsequently broke up after her camp took a more plastic approach to the pop genre.
In “Behind The Music: Gym Class Heroes,” McCoy opened up about the break-up, stating Perry took the cowards way out of the confrontation, opting to email him the results of her emotional affirmations. Rather than be an adult about things, Perry arm-chaired her final wishes and avoided all possible decency that the relationship could have been awarded.
It started off with ‘I love you so much I hate to do this…’ Someone that you are ready to spend the rest of your life with sends you a fucking email just shitting on your whole parade. It destroyed me.
When he later heard a song she had written specifically about him titled “Circle The Drain,” McCoy was quick to fire back with a substantial burn of his own.
I heard she put out a song that's about me, or about some old habits or whatever. [And] I look at it like this: I'm just stoked that she finally has a song with some substance on her record. Good job.
Burn. So Burn.
The 32 year old, New York bred singer and rapper has since dropped the narcotic addiction that played a large role in the stagnation of his career and has put out numerous singles that have garnered a more than respective following. He continues to do so in his latest featuring crooner Jason Mraz titled, “Rough Water.” The softer, hip hop infused ditty is without the help of his on-again off-again partners in Gym Class Heroes, but is impressive in the collaboration work the solid career is built upon.
And what of the girl of his past? She’s since had a failed marriage to an admitted sex-addict and is now in a high-school limbo of relationships with John Mayer, one of the dullest human beings to ever walk the planet.
Mayer vs. Mraz? The win clearly goes to Travie McCoy. It’s Jason fucking Mraz for crying out loud.
