It looks like a robot is playing, but it's glorious.

Since you're a human being with thumbs, you've played the original Super Mario Bros. The cumulative time spent on trying to help that plumber get laid probably ranks in the billions of hours, but that's totally fine — the game was completely badass.

And the biggest chunk of that time is coming from game speed-runners. It's a huge subculture in the gaming world, where people try to conquer games at top speed. And even though Super Mario Bros. is over 30 years old, it's still a crown jewel in the speed-running world and people are still dedicating their lives to running through the thing as fast as they can.

After 6,607 attempts, YouTuber darbian managed to beat the game in 4:57.627, beating out the previous world record of 4:57.69. Wow. We've gotta give props to that guy, as we get frustrated with a game and pitch the controller across the room after dying about twice.

What's even cooler is that this run was accomplished on an actual NES with no hacks. Darbian does use a few simple exploits to shave off some seconds but no game-breaking takes place.

This display of absolute gaming glory makes us wanna plug in the ol' NES and give this record a whack — if Mom hadn't thrown it away when we flunked all those classes in middle school. Goddamn it, Mom.
