Naked people in a headset could go the way of the BetaMax without your help …

Since porn ultimately decided the fate of VHS vs. BetaMax and DVD HD vs. BluRay, there's a lot at stake when it comes to seeing naked women on a new medium.

The next battle is virtual reality (VR) technology, which could be the next big thing — as long as there's enough porn on it to support its early days. There are a few companies hawking products such as the Samsung Gear VR headset, Google Cardboard and Oculus Rift, but it's really failed to gain much traction. A recent study notes that just 33 percent of Americans are aware of VR, and 36 percent of those want to buy it.

That's where porn comes in.

Naughty America showed off its brand-new VR equipment at SXSW this week. They featured a pair of female porn stars wearing Samsung Gear VR headsets with “Naughty America VR” stickers covering the Samsung logos — and since SXSW is filled with nerds, they were flocked to with scrawny nerds taking pictures.

Nothing creepy about that scene at all.

“Of the three or four companies producing adult content, we’re the largest company doing this. Most are taking a wait and see approach. The challenge for these other companies is that there’s no template for companies to follow,” says Naughty America's CIO Ian Paul. Plus, shooting these videos takes a significant investment of time and money. It took 6 months of experimentation before Naughty America could release its first VR video.

This week, the company will launch a VR-centric web site called Randy’s Roadstop and they're already looking at 3rd party add-ons that will sync with the videos … just use your imagination on exactly what that entails.

But you didn't just come here for industry trends. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how these things actually come together. And since the fun bits are blurred out, it's more or less SFW.

Hmm … seems somewhat interesting. If you want VR to really take off, do your patriotic duty and buy some VR porn. It's the only way.
