He’s not made of metal or wires, but digital art is where it’s at for this Android. Born Andrew Jones, Android manipulates pixels on a computer screen into modern wonders, from holograms to virtual reality to projections on planetarium ceilings. A fixture on the festival circuit and at Burning Man, Android is all ones and zeros, but with soul.

FAVORITE FICTIONAL ROBOT?
Adam

WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN LYONS, COLORADO? IS THE BOULDER AREA A GOOD SPOT FOR ART?
Lyons has all the most important criteria for developing an artists consciousness: beautiful trees, fresh air, and water. The geography is heavy on canyons, mountains, creeks, rivers, and streams and it provides the space and isolation to experience and reflect the nature that surrounds it. So, yes.

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE YOU WORK?
Lately I have been listening to sets of bird songs and animal sounds on Spotify. I often listen to friend’s music and mantras.

WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE CONNECT SO DEEPLY WITH YOUR ART?
Secrets we don’t tell ourselves.

Good art makes you think, helps you find your truth and reminds you of how you see the world.  I think the art that really resonates with people helps us remember something that we didn’t even know we forgot, something that was there all along in our unwritten consciousness. So even if I did know, I don’t think I could explain it with words.

FAVORITE PROJECT YOU’VE COMPLETED SO FAR?
Fractal Planet (2013) at Burning Man was a pretty massive undertaking. Samskara (24 min immersive dome film) is cool.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR VIRTUAL REALITY GAME, MICRODOSE VR.
It’s a flow state simulator that uses VR as a transformative tool. The experiencer is dropped into one of many different worlds they can explore while creating synesthetic sculptures to the music of their choice, all while interfacing with real time biometrics. It gives anyone the opportunity to experience the highest levels of creative potential without the decades of art training.

YOU CREATE LIVE CONCERT VISUALS. WHO’VE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIANS TO WORK WITH?
Tipper, Bassnectar, Beats Antique, Bluetech, Random Rab. I’ve recently been synching up with Clozee exclusively using Microdose VR as the projection platform.

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU BEEN TO BURNING MAN, AND WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU EVER SAW THERE?
I have been there 15 years in a row.

Once we found this older man under a stage in camp and we really thought he might be dead. We pulled him out and were able to revive him…he was in pretty bad shape.  He kind of came back to life ranting and raving, talking about how weak people were and he was like, “You haven’t partied until you’ve partied in diapers.” And we saw he was wearing like, adult depends full of piss and shit.

IF YOU REALLY WERE AN ANDROID, WOULD YOU OPERATE ON MAC, PC, CHROME OR LINUX?
Real androids would run on code created by fellow androids not humans. In my studio I use MAC for making a lot of art and PC for the VR heavy lifting.

NANCY REAGAN SAID TO ‘JUST SAY NO’ TO DRUGS. WAS SHE RIGHT?
I’m more curious about how often you think about Nancy Regan and why she gets a special spot in your consciousness.

ALIVE OR DEAD, WHICH ARTISTS MOST INSPIRE YOU?
Alive I like Kris Kuski a lot, dead Stanislav Szuklaski.

WHAT ELSE IS ON YOUR MIND RIGHT NOW? WHAT ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH THESE DAYS, ARTISTIC OR OTHERWISE?
I’m pretty into being a dad. I have a 2 year old daughter and an 8 month old son and the amount of growth and change they experience on a daily basis is mind blowing.

WHAT SHOULD WE BE LOOKING FOR NEXT FROM ANDROID JONES?
We’re releasing the Alpha version of Microdose VR soon, and I have a few original works coming out in the next few months.
