CU Boulder is crediting a monumental increase in new student applications to "something other" than newly legal weed, which if you think about it is hilarious. Those guys are so funny.

Okay, here are the facts you need to know.

  • New student applications to CU Boulder are up 33% from last year.
  • Out-of-state applications increased by 46%.
  • International applications increased by 65%.

The university is saying that this massive boost in applications probably has nothing to do with the fact that weed just became legal in Colorado. They're attributing the growing horde of students who want to move to Boulder to the fact that they have a new application system and CU recruiters visited 120 extra schools last fall. Ha ha, that's a good one!

We're sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Colorado is on the forefront of a historical decriminalization movement, or that weed practically grows on trees here. It's probably not related to the super fun smoke-outs, easily accessible dispensaries, and fun-loving, relaxed (code for stoned as balls) attitude of everyone who lives here either. Nothing at all!

And while CU is heralding the increase in applications as an opportunity to  have one of the "smartest, most talented classes" ever, we think they might be underestimating the class of 2018's interest getting really, really ripped legally. Only time will tell if this newest batch of freshman is here to expand their academic capabilities in the fresh mountain air of Boulder, or just to hot box their Bob Marley poster-laden room while a hobo gives them dreads.
