Musical Map: Cities of the World” is a new interactive time killer released by Spotify. The map takes over 20 billion calculations of listener/track relationships and — with the most “popular” tracks from around the world omitted — generates a regionally “distinct” playlist based on musical tastes according to listeners in the city.

So basically, Spotify wheels out the garbage we’re all consistently forced with from large media and whittles down tastes pertaining to local culture. This isn’t only shocking for a large company to enact something like this for its users freely, but it’s downright genius …

Per its site, Spotify describes the idea of “distinct” as “music that people in each city listen to quite a bit, which people in other cities also do not listen to very much. So it is, exactly, the music that makes them different from people everywhere else.”

Coming in on the Denver list are a few notable locals like the now defunct acts Air Dubai and Tickle Me Pink, but also peppers in obvious, jam bandy / bluegrassy mainstays like Widespread Panic and Yonder Mountain String Band (because those are absolutely more Colorado friendly than most other areas in the nation). The (updated twice monthly) list spreads itself around with multiple genres too, ranging anywhere from EDM heavy hitters to less popular mid-level indie rockers — which is surprisingly accurate to the current Colorado culture everyone here is #blessed with.

Welcome to the only thing we've managed to do today aside from overly casual bathroom runs and counterproductive wall stares …
