Erica Z puts on an Oculus VR headset, and is transported to another world — a magical elven world.
“You’re given a spellbook and a magic wand, and suddenly, your magic wand turns into a penis,” she tells Rooster Magazine. She begins casting spells with her penis, and a beautiful elf girl performs different sex acts for different spells. This is what it’s like to play a virtual reality porn video game.
Erica works at Nutaku, the world’s largest gaming platform dedicated to erotic video games. Backed by porn behemoth MindGeek (owner of Pornhub, YouPorn, RedTube), the site aims to take Japan’s pornographic video game industry to a global level.
Basement-dwelling nerds around the world no longer need to masturbate and play World of Warcraft on two separate occasions. Finally, they’re able to do both at the same time.
“Actually, I would imagine that they probably have the gameplay, and after they win they’re rewarded with the erotic content. They probably play the game, gain access to the content, and then maybe masturbate,” Erica speculates.
Then, she changes her mind. “Honestly, our fans are the best multi-taskers in the world of gaming. They probably could jerk off and game at the same time.”
The majority of Nutaku’s content is hentai sex games. Hentai is cartoon erotica that also originates from Japan.
“Porn used to be illegal in Japan, so Japanese artists would bypass the laws against male/female erotica with monster and tentacle erotica,” Erica says.
Modern hentai stays true to its creature-porn roots, although depictions of humans are now prevalent, as well. Today’s hentai is famous for depictions of women with better bodies than any real lady could ever dream of, and men with penises bigger than a baby arm.
Its unrealistic nature explains why Nutaku’s users prefer playing video game porn to seeing real-life women getting railed out by real-life dicks.
“Hentai has no limits,” writes the author of hentai’s Urban Dictionary definiton. “That is why it is so great. I have nothing against real pornography, I enjoy it also. But hentai is perfect. Normal pornography is not. Hentai is beautiful.”
Nutaku is an infant of a company, but business is already booming. The site now has 15 million subscribers and 75 million visits per month.
But getting there wasn’t easy. Nutaku needed to invest a ton of money into game developers who would put sex scenes in their video games.
“Most of the games we’d find weren’t erotic or didn’t have full nudity. So we’d tell the developers, ‘We want to take it to the next level. Make it erotic and we’ll sell it,'” Erica says.
Selling their content on Nutaku is a game-changer for independent game studios.
“A lot of indie game developers are struggling to turn a profit on the app store. Less than 1 percent of games are actually successful,” Erica says. “We help them by putting them on our platform. We keep the indie game scene alive because without platforms that fund these studios, they go under.”
For example, take Armor Blitz, a game where players assemble an army of hot anime chicks for battle. When the game debuted on Google Play in November 2016, it grossed just $23,400 in six months, less than half its production cost. Then, the game added in some hentai porn and relaunched on Nutaku. Armor Blitz then raked in over $160,000 in six months.
There becomes a demand for adult video games as other platforms crack down on censorship. On Steam, an all ages platform, constant complaints against 18+ content make for endless clampdowns on adult fun. Nutaku allows for a separation of the two. They consider themselves “the steamy version of Steam.”
“I think love of gaming has to be there for you to be into Nutaku,” Erica says. “You have to want that kind of interaction and want something extra to your erotic content. You have to jump into the experience, the story, playing this character and having to accomplish a mission. You have to want to work for it.”
It’s all worth it, fans of pornographic video games say — a little hard work for more rewarding climax.
