The Tennessee legislature has passed a bill banning marriages between two cousins, and that isn’t even the funniest part of this story.

According to an article from The Guardian, Republican representative Gino Bulso took up most of the debate time during deliberations, making multiple references to his incestuous ancestry and arguing that gay cousins who marry pose little threat to public health.

At one point, Bulso explained that his grandparents had been first cousins who came to America from Italy in the 1920s, later marrying.

As far as we know, not a single person has pointed out that the current and tumultuous state of affairs in America may have something to do with our nation’s politicians hailing from incestuous lineage, but we think it explains a lot.
