Exactly eight years ago, a dude spent 10,000 bitcoin to buy two pizzas. It was the first real world bitcoin purchase ever.
The pizzas were bought by Laszlo Hanyecz in Jacksonville, Florida, in a trade with another bitcoin enthusiast and early programmer.
Today, bitcoin is worth $8,200 — and 10,000 of them could buy 6.5 million pizzas (at $12.50 a pizza). Because if Hanyecz hadn't bought pizza, but held onto the coin, it would be worth $82 million.
That's enough pizza to:
— Feed the entire city of Denver for about a week.
— If laid end-to-end, stretch 1,400 miles, or about halfway across the United States.
— Feed your mom for a day.
— If stacked on top of each other, tower 200 miles in the air.
The bitcoin website forex has an interactive graphic showing how high into space those pizzas would reach, shooting up past Mount Fuji, past airplanes, and up above the Space Station.
With that money, today, he could've bought:
— 410 Lamborghini Gallardos.
— The most expensive home ever sold in Colorado, an Aspen mansion owned by a Koch brother.
— A Gulfstream g650 jet, plus $15 million left over to outfit that plane with a bidet.
— 11 million massages in Thailand.
— 4 million massages in Thailand with happy endings.
— 82 million powerball tickets, and if you won, then, shit, man, you're even richer!
Despite these missed opportunities, Laszlo said he doesn't regret buying 24 slices of pepperoni.
"It wasn't like bitcoins had any value back then, so the idea of trading them for a pizza was incredibly cool," Hanyecz said to The New York Times. "No one knew it was going to get so big."
Laszlo isn't the only sucker. The guy he gave the bitcoin to, Jeremy Sturdivant, spent all 10,000 bitcoins years ago and says he has a few hundred thousand dollars in bitcoin left.
Also, exactly one year ago, on Pizza Day 2017, I myself bought a bbq sandwich with bitcoin. If I'd have held on to it — the bitcoin, not the food — I would have enough money to buy four sandwiches today.
That's a lesson, kids. Don't spend your bitcoin on pizza or sandwiches. Spend it on drugs.
