“Do you know that this Coronavirus shit is actually fucking real and people are dying from it? Do you care? Of course not. Because you’re a selfish fucking twat.”

That was just the first part of the message that was blasted through a loudspeaker to Denver residents on Sunday evening, just after the nightly 8 PM howl. For several minutes the mysterious message played, from some unseen source, ridiculing and lambasting those who aren’t following the COVID-19 guidelines.

It was the perfect time for such an unexpected rant: It was Mother's Day; everyone was outside, listening or participating in the howls; the night was warm, windows were open, balconies were in use, and then, suddenly, out of nowhere, the robotic voice erupted.

“It’s vulgar. It’s out there. I was in shock,” Marianna Yurkevich, a Denver resident told KDVR. “I was actually like, ‘Oh my goodness!’ We were standing around looking, like, ‘When is this going to stop?’”

Who was behind the sonic admonishment? It’s a good question. Was it was a frustrated Mayor Michael Hancock, speaking his mind with anonymity, using a public loud-speaker to berate his City? Or was it a healthcare worker at the end of their rope, finally lashing out at the world for not following the rules, for not trying to make their lives a little easier? Or a terrified resident, furious at everyone for not isolating completely?

It could have been anyone, really — anyone with any motive.

Regardless, it’s pretty funny. But hopefully it just doesn’t become a regular nightly aspect of Denver’s 8 PM howls. Because while it may have been surprising and humerous once, it’s clear that whoever wrote the script for this is no Ernest Hemmingway. People aren’t going to want to listen to that kind of vulgar garbage every night.
