We thought we were heartless. But our misanthropy pales in comparison to the story of Brittany Ozarowski who scammed her dad, her grandma and the entire community out money for her supposed treatments of bone, brain and other cancers instead spending it on her heroin habit.
We thought we were heartless. But our misanthropy pales in comparison to the story of Brittany Ozarowski who scammed her dad, her grandma and the entire community out money for her supposed treatments of bone, brain and other cancers instead spending it on her heroin habit.
Through an elaborate scheme of donation jars (with the above picture of her in a wheelchair on it), Facebook posts, fundraisers and family, the 21-year-old worked the entire community raising $100,000 from the sell of her grandma's home, $25,000 from her dad emptying his IRA and even going so far as milking a man who'd recently lost his son to cancer out of thousands of dollars in charity donations.
“This defendant perpetrated an absolutely despicable scam,” said Suffolk DA Thomas Spota. “There was no cancer, no chemotherapy, no radiation, and no medical bills. There was just heroin.”
As with all heroin addicts, Brittany failed to follow through with certain parts of the plan. Donors started to become suspicious of Ozarowski's when she refused rides to the doctor and claimed a new vitamin allowed her to keep her hair through extensive chemotherapy sessions. You plan an elaborate ponzi scheme that requires multiple steps and the one you couldn't follow through with was shaving your head? You'd never see this type of lazy attention to detail with a crack cocaine addiction.
Ozarowski is scheduled to be arraigned today on a charge of grand-larceny rap.
